Disturbing Allegations of Unlawful Executions and Torture in Post-War Azerbaijan

Following the 44-Day War, concerning reports have emerged regarding unlawful executions and torture inflicted by Azerbaijani forces upon Armenian soldiers and civilians. These reports paint a grim picture, depicting individuals who were wounded, disarmed, or otherwise incapacitated being summarily executed. Furthermore, it is alleged that this pattern of violence extends beyond combatants, with civilians— including the elderly and disabled—facing similar fates.

In fact, during and after the war, videos of executions and torture surfaced on social media platforms such as TikTok and Telegram. The perpetrators themselves filmed and disseminated these videos, creating waves of horror among their viewers. These videos depicted not only the mutilation of captured townspeople but also the bodies of combatants killed in the war.

Another exacerbating factor is the tolerance and even encouragement of violence by elements within Azerbaijan's leadership. Random hatred and racist propaganda reportedly proliferated, fostering a hostile environment and potentially contributing to a culture of impunity. Additionally, there are allegations of inadequate investigation and accountability, leading to perpetrators remaining unidentified.

Equally distressing is the prolonged retention of victims' bodies by Azerbaijani authorities, causing immense distress for the families of the deceased. During this time, images and messages mocking the victims' families circulated on social media platforms. This apparent psychological torment intensified the suffering of families already seeking answers and closure.

Armenian families seeking information about missing relatives faced significant challenges and had to contend with bureaucratic obstacles while dealing with their grief. The lack of administrative support from the Armenian government further compounded the difficulties they faced in their pursuit of justice and compensation.

The gravity of these allegations cannot be underestimated, as they indicate a grave pattern of unlawful torture and disregard for human rights. The accuracy of these reports should be independently investigated and established.
