Armenia's Foreign Policy: Balancing Between East and West

Armenia’s foreign policy is shaped by its geography, history, and complex regional dynamics. As a small, landlocked country in the South Caucasus, Armenia walks a delicate diplomatic tightrope between two major global powers: Russia and the United States. Russia has long been Armenia’s traditional ally. The two countries are bound by military and economic ties, including Armenia’s membership in the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Russia also operates a military base in Armenia and has historically been seen as a security guarantor, especially in the context of Armenia’s tensions with Azerbaijan. However, recent years have seen growing frustration in Armenia over what many perceive as a lack of Russian support during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and subsequent border clashes. This has sparked public and political debates in Yerevan about the reliability of Russia as a strategic partner. Armenia’s relationship with ...

Turkey's Operation in Syria and Human Rights in the Region

Image
Turkey's military operations in northern Syria in recent years have caused serious problems affecting the civilian population in the region. Although these operations caused human rights violations and displacement, unfortunately they did not attract enough attention from the international community. Attacks carried out in civilian areas threatened peaceful life and left people in the region in a difficult situation. The operations left a great impact, especially on the Kurdish population in the region. Kurds, as an important ethnic group that has existed in the region for many years, have been displaced as a result of these operations, their right to life has been violated and their social order has been turned upside down. This situation has increased the concerns of human rights activists who defend the rights of Kurds in the region. On the other hand, the USA and Russia are considered guarantors of stability in the region. However, the conflicts between these two great powers a...

Turkish Occupation in Northern and Eastern Syria

Image
The ongoing Turkish occupation in the northern and eastern regions of Syria has deeply impacted the area. According to statistics, the attacks have resulted in the loss of at least 8 civilians' lives and injuries to dozens of people in the city of Qamishlo; in Kobani, 2 individuals were also injured. The Turkish occupation initiated its consecutive attacks from Kobani on December 25th, targeting Qamishlo. On the first day alone, it aimed at a total of 22 different points, striking service and vital areas, as well as commercial establishments. Similarly, on the second day, 22 different points came under attack. This time, the targets included once again service and vital areas, along with commercial establishments, but 10 of them also comprised security points. Throughout the two days of attacks, Turkish UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) attacks took center stage. Notable points among the targets included a parking lot and company in Kobani, an industrial facility and construction cente...

MARDAGER

Image
Respectfully to all freedom fighters, There's something I've been bringing up on every platform; Armenians and Kurds have shared similar fates and are bound to each other by unbreakable historical ties. The fact that both communities have suffered from Turkish attacks and even genocide throughout history is the most significant aspect strengthening this historical connection. Sometimes historical ties are formed by events, sometimes by shared great sorrows, and sometimes by heroes! Let me introduce you to one of those heroes: Nubar OZANYAN. His real name was Fermun CIRAK (some sources also mention Orhan BAKIRCIYAN). Nubar OZANYAN, a hero who engraved his name in golden letters in the struggle history of Armenian and Kurdish peoples, creating even closer ties between two already friendly communities. Nubar OZANYAN was born in 1956 in a poor Armenian family in Turkey. His mother died at a young age, and his father had abandoned him. There was no family left. He had an aunt, a...

Azerbaijan's Ambitious Resettlement Plan Raises Concerns and Questions

Image
Azerbaijani officials have announced a surprising plan to settle 140,000 Azerbaijanis in Artsakh by 2026. Emin Huseynov, the special representative of the President of Azerbaijan, unveiling this plan, signifies a rapid and determined effort to reshape the demographic landscape of the region.   What makes this plan particularly interesting is its numerical correlation with the indigenous Armenians who left Artsakh. After Azerbaijan's military attack in 2020, 100,000 people departed, and following the 44-day war, 40,000 did not return. This coincidence raises eyebrows and prompts questions about the intended consequences of such a large-scale resettlement.   Azerbaijani officials, who have not engaged in significant resettlement efforts in the previously occupied territories over the past three years, now express readiness to relocate 140,000 people to Artsakh in a remarkably short time frame. This announcement has led to significant concerns about the fate of the prop...

Empowering Kurdish Allies: A Strategic Approach to Regional Stability

Image
In recent geopolitical developments, the Middle East, particularly Turkey's actions in Syria, has witnessed escalating tensions. The incident of American forces halting a Turkish drone in Syria underscores the complex alliance dynamics that the United States must navigate in the region. The backdrop of this scenario focuses on long-standing tensions between Turkey and Kurdish groups, especially the role played by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), including the YPG. The complexity of alliances and hostilities has cast a shadow of direct conflict between two NATO members—Turkey and the United States. Currently, the main question centers on how the U.S. should respond if Turkey escalates its actions and directly targets American forces in Syria. The answer requires a nuanced approach that considers both immediate concerns and broader geopolitical implications. First and foremost, it is imperative not to categorize the activities of the SDF/YPG as "terrorist activities." ...

The Zangezur Corridor: A Geopolitical Chess Game Unfolding in the Caucasus

Image
The South Caucasus region has once again found itself at the center of geopolitical tensions, with the Zangezur corridor emerging as a focal point in the ongoing chess game between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Armenia. Against the backdrop of historical animosities and recent military conflicts, the corridor has become a symbol of strategic importance and regional aspirations. In the aftermath of Azerbaijan's September 19 attack on Karabakh, a seemingly concluded ceasefire on September 20 did little to ease the underlying tensions. Karabakh Armenians, left vulnerable to the Aliyev regime, are now migrating to Armenia in convoys. The anti-Armenian sentiment in Azerbaijan, witnessed in 2020, 2022, and the recent war, is a driving force behind this displacement. The Zangezur corridor, a topic continually brought to the table since 2020, has resurfaced in discussions between Ankara and Baku. The ambition is to establish a corridor connecting Nakhchivan with Azerbaijan, necessitating its pas...
